Once the OS has been restored using a disc, the Dell recovery is no longer useable and you must reinstall with discs.

As you have previously used the Vista DVD, the procedure would be the same.  At power on, press F12 to access the boot menu and select the DVD drive that you have the Vista (Windows) DVD loaded on.  This will allow you to boot from the Vista DVD.  Install Vista and then install the drivers from the Dell drivers and utilities disc.

In general the correct and required install is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Dell Desktop or Laptop System Software on applicable models (3) Install Motherboard Chipset Drivers (4) Install Device Drivers including Video, Dell Sound, Ethernet, etc.

Hi thanks for that. I have reinstalled VISTA using the dvd and reinstalled the drivers using the Dell media dvd.  I then checked to see if the Factory Image is there but it isn't!  I get the same message telling me to instal it using the media dvd.

There is no way to recover or rebuild the Dell recovery partition.  It is a "factory only" item.

O OK thanks for that, but then why is the error message telling me that I can reinstal using the media dvd? Sorry to be so dum.

The "media DVD" is NOT the Dell recovery partition on the hard drive.  It is the Windows OS DVD.
