Hmm, my WinXP home seems to have a built-in ftp program. Just open a cmd window and type in ftp. Then do a help to see the available commands.

For something with a bit more polish, I'd recommend WS_FTP LE from Ipswitch. It's free for personal home or educational users and can be downloaded from here.

Lets separate fact from fiction.  I can definately testify the FTP is part of Windows XP Pro, I use it every day.  The first and second replys can not both be right, which is it?   If I really get annoyed enough I will install XP Home tonight to get a definative answer.  P.S  FTP may not be a default component, therefore check add/remove additional components.

You can FTP from Internet Explorer so yes it is a part of XP, both Home and Professional.

You can, for most ftp sites, use IE, type the address as ftp://ftp.address

where address is the domain name of the site (in help it gives the example 'microsoft.com'). More details in IE help, for cases when using proxy server or where anonymous access is not allowed.
The MS knowledge data base has a several articles and fixes for when this does not work
