File Download window does not appear when trying to download drivers for desktop PC
Hello,
My first time here as the system I am working on is out of warranty, making Dell's tech support an overly expensive option. I am trying to download driver updates to a Dimension 3000, desktop PC. However, any time I choose the driver I want to download and click on the "Download Now" button, the top third of my page turns grey and does nothing else. On another system I can download the drivers fine from the same page. On the system that works, the entire device drivers page turns grey and a window appears to conduct the download.
I have tried turning off all antivirus/popup blockers, and ran IE with no add-ons, with no change in result. The Dimension 3000 appears to be running fine otherwise. I can search around the internet and download other things that use pop up windows to conduct the final download. It only appears to fail when trying to download drivers from Dell's site.
Any ideas on what is causing the problem or what other steps I could try?

Though you landed in the Linux section, I'm assuming you're actually using Windows on your 3000 - seems to happen a lot since the Linux section pops up first when you open the Software section.
Since the Dell drivers come from an FTP site, couple things to check:
1) Check your firewall settings and make sure the FTP ports aren't blocked/disabled (usually ports 20 and 21).
2) If you're using Internet Explorer, go to Tools - Options - Advanced; there are 2 settings for FTP under Browsing: Enable Folder View for FTP, and Use Passive FTP. On IE6 those are both checked, but you might need to play with them (I normally use Firefox instead).

Also disable any Pop up Blocker.

Firefox does not have the same problem on this system, so the issue must be in IE 8. After uninstalling IE8, IE 7 worked fine and did not have the same problem. I then tried to reinstall IE8 and got the same error again.
I don't know what the specific problem is, but it is definately in IE8. Oh well, I"ll just stick with IE7 on this system.
