File Types , EDIT
What is the standard program that Windows 98 uses to open Jpeg image files and jpg. at the moment I am useing "ACD See"
I would like to also know where I can get a complete standard list of file types that comes with W98 SECOND Edition .
I can see the file types at the moment when I go to folder options etc but what was the the standard files that comes installed with W98 SECOND Edition?
And also how can one be sure of the correct information to give when wishes to "edit file types " and also
the information for DDE i.e Dynamic Data exchange ?
I wish to able to open JPEG images without haveing to use ACD See program all the time the standard icon for jpeg does not seem to be there any more.

first question
explorer is the standard without the microsoft office' photoeditor
with the office that will be the Microsoft photo editor,
acdsee is the best image browser costs less space, offers thumbnails and other features, jsut an opinion though.
second question
u can see those standard file types in you control panel menu, then folder options, and click on the tab file types.
(just not sure if this is the exact anwser u are looking for)
third editing of file types may prevent the file from executing.
for the last one, just right click on the jpeg file, click on open with, look for the standard jpeg viewer u want, that will be the Microsoft Photo Editor or the explorer, and check the "always use this program to open this file".
thats all.
yer right den that is iexplore.exe

Thanks for your reply but I have selected C:\WINDOWS.000\Explorer.exe to open "JPEG" images but every time I try to open a Image by double clicking on it displays the following message:
Some files can harm your computer. If the file information below
looks suspicous, or you do not fully trust the source, do not open or
save this file.
If I click on open the same dialogue box appears again.
I am therefore unable to open a picture file by double click and also if the picture is "NOT" in a folder I am unable to use ACD See to view the picture?
Quick View works okay to view my images.
I am able to browse my folders with "ACD See" for picture files okay
I am also unable to locate the original standard icon image for "JPEG" images

The default file for opening .jpg and .gif files is Internet Explorer (iexplore.exe), not Explorer.exe.

I have made the change
Editing action for type: JPG
Action
OPEN
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe"
When I click on a image i.e a .JPG file it still "Will not" open the image: but I can still use "Quick View" and browse images if they are in a FOLDER with ACD See ??

If you need any furthur help in re-setting your file associations to W/98 defaults, download and follow the instructions to execute, "FixPix.inf" from here:
http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/fixpix.htm
Doing so will remove the registry associations for .jpg, .gif and .bmp file types (including any corrupted keys) and rewrite them to W/98 defaults...that is, for IE to open .jpg and .gif files and MS Paint to open .bmp images.

Thankyou Dan,
This program has fixed the Program without a doubt "FixPix.inf" which I downloaded from http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/fixpix.htm .
I think the reason I might have had problems is that " ACD See program" has so many features that I could have transformed the JPEG files in Windows 98 which allowed the ACD See program to be in control...
I suppose now if I could if I wished associate ACD See with JPEG files also if I was to Edit File Types again
I am able to browse folders with ACD See okay but a single image I can see now that I need to go back to Folder options and "Associate JPEG with JPEG.
What I am still very keen to know is where the folder is that stores all the different types of ICONs available for one to use . As there are no ICON images in in the Folder called ICONS I look in Windows . I know how to select a different icon when useing folder options for a file type but where is that FOLDER ???
Many Thanks to all George http://mysite.freeserve.com/77

Many icons (although not those for graphics files) are located in C:\Windows\System\shell32.dll.
