File transfer and settings wizard, I want to create my own wizard disk.

File transfer and settings wizard, I want to create my own wizard disk.  However, that option is grayed out and I don't know why?  I need to transfer files
from my old pc and can't until I resolve this.  Any ideas or solutions?

What pc do you have and does it have a cd or dvd burner?

In the wizard just set it to use the hard disk and then copy those files to a DVD.

I have an Inspiron E1705 (a.k.a. 4900), which has a DVD burner.

Thank you for taking the time to help me, your altruism  is appreciated.

Thank you, but I don't see an option to set it to use the hard disk.  There are 4 options:

1.  I want to create a wizard disk in the following drive.
2.  I already have a Wizard disk
3.  I will use the Wizard disk from the Windows XP CD
4.  I have already collected my files and settings from my old computer

I can't understand why option 1 is disabled.

Thanks again.

I think you are selecting the wrong option at the very beginning of the wizard, you should select Old Computer, hit next then you will see the option "Other". This is how you save your files and settings for transfer later to a new PC.

You will use the option "New Computer" when you want to transfer the save files and settings onto the new computer, this will actually be done on the new computer's file and transfer wizard..

I really appreciate you trying to help, but that is contrary to the documentation in DELL user's manual.  In fact, my old pc is Windows '98, which doesn't even have the transfer wizard so I can't go to it and select "Old Computer" so I can copy the files from there.

To get the files from there, the manual says go to my new pc, make a wizard disk, take that to the old pc, start the wizard from an .exe on the wizard disk and copy the files.  Then I should be able to take it back to my new pc, and copy the files to it.  It also says the old computer can be running any operating system, from Windows '95 and up.

My problem is that the option to create the wizard disk is disabled.

Oh I misunderstood the situation, have you ever burned a cd in this dvd burner of yours?

Do a properties on this DVD drive and go to the recording tab and be sure burning is enabled for that drive... If there is no recording Tab let me know.

I guess you got it going using Rich's advice

FYI  the reason the create a wizard disc is greyed out is because it uses a Floppy drive for this..
