Files that are required for Windows to run properly...dll cache (SFC /Scannow
A couple days ago I received a message from XP Home SP2 about the fact that I have incorrect, old, or unsigned versions of some files (I can't remember the exact wording and I can't recreate the problem). THe message asked me to insert the Windows XP Home edition CD, nothing really seemed to happen, but I carried on and left it. Then just this morning the exact same thing happened so I didn't bother with the XP CD insert and googled the problem. Somebody said somethign about running:
SFC /Scannow (from the cmd.exe command prompt)
I did this and another dialog comes up saying:
"Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache"
"Insert your Windows XP Home edition CD now"
So I insert my Dell provided OS recovery CD and click on the retry button but the dialog just keeps coming back as if it doesn't think the CD I've inserted is actually the XP cd. I did some searching on this and somebody with a similar problem (although using XP Pro) had to do something about making the CD rom accessible on the local machine, but the procedure wouldn't work on HOME edition. I found this post that was also for a person with Pro edition:
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=sw_winxp&message.id=96559&query.id=160188#M96559
But either I can't use their steps on Home edition or I have no idea how to change my product COA key.
Please help.
(incidentally, McAfee seems to be acting up slightly, I can't really explain how, but I have a sneaking suspicion it might have been the one to screw things up, but I'm not sure).

See if the information here allows you to correct the problem.

Thanks for the tip there. I tried everything on that site and I still kept getting prompted for my XP CD. I uninstalled and reinstalled McAfee Virus and Firewall Plus. I will be back on teh message board if the error comes up again (I don't know how to reproduce it).

Do a search for this 'Name' in the registry, sfcdisable
Modify its value to 4
exit and restart computer. Run sfc /scannow (from Start|Run)

If you have a moment, can you explain what that change did? And, if you know, can you explain why on earth that wouldnt' have been configured properly in the first place?
Thanks a lot maxd.

Sorry for the delay. The Dell server didn't notify me of your last reply. sfc normally runs in quiet mode replacing any missing or corrupt system files from the system cache; it doesn't make any mention of files that were replaced to my knowledge. If you had some system file problems I don't think re-installing a program would help with that.
Modifying the value to 4 suppresses the popup that you were getting that somehow triggers the required path for the good system files to the cd-rom. Don't know why it hasn't been used, the modification that is.
