You don't have any choices at this point. Hard to know if XP will reboot after you do a hard shutdown in the middle of a System Restore.

You should still be able to run PC Restore (Ctrl-F11) and reset the hard drive to "factory fresh".

Thanks Ron. I appreciate your response.

About 49 hours into System Restore, a pop up screen informed me that my computer could not be reset to the point I had selected -- just another frustration after being in the operation for that amount of time.

I'll try to do a System Restore again in a few days, when I can free up some of the project build up that came from having my main computer basically down. I'm starting to wonder if System Restore could be part of the problem, although I did think SR would work again after I reset the E-510 to factory fresh specs.

Do you think it would help if I do another PC Restore and try to again reset everything to factory fresh specs.

It sounds like the System Restore database is corrupted. The only fix for that is to delete all the restore points (they're likely corrupted anyway) and then set a new restore point. But you won't be able to go back any farther than the date you set this new restore point.

<>PC Restore will delete all the info on the hard drive including the existing System Restore database so that should fix the problem with restore points.

<>As for the original problem of no sound after PC Restore, it's possible you just need to install the correct driver for the audio card. And then install every single Microsoft update (eg, SP3, plus all the updates for Internet Explorer, Office, etc.)
