GTGina.dll

I was an idiot and removed this dll (actually moved it from the system32 file onto the desktop) because it was causing issues and Macafee actually flagged it as a virus.  Forgot to move it back before I rebooted.

Now, I cannot start my computer.  It starts to boot-up and then says the GTgina.dll file is missing and that I have to have a system adminstrator replace the file (well, that's me, unfortunatley).  The problem is, how can I put it back when the computer won't start-up (even in safe mode).

Any help much appreciated.

Boot to recovery console & extract the file from the XP CD

If you need help to do that

Make sure the boot order in the BIOS is set to
floppy
CDROM
Hard drive

Put your XP installation CD in the drive and reboot
Press any key to boot from the CD

Set up will copy lots of files

Select the first "R"  This is the Recoivery Console
Select which installation to repair.  This is usually 1  (if you only have one operating system)

When asked for password, if you did not set one just press ENTER

At the c:\ prompt, exactly type the following:

expand d:\i386\GTgina.dl_ c:\windows\system32\GTgina.dll

Press enter

NOTES:
d: is drive letter for your optical drive. Your drive letter may be different.
Be sure to include _ (underscore symbol) in GTgina.dl_
Put one space between _ and c:\windows\
When that's done, remove XP CD and reboot normally.

Thank you, both. what I needed.  I only know enough to be very dangerous, as I have already proven.

When the machine is booting up watch for the option to press F2  (maybe in the top right corner)

You should be in the BIOS.
Use the arrow keys to navigate the pages and look for Boot order.
Then use the arrow keys along with the instructions on the page to change the order to

floppy
CDROM
Hard drive
SAVE and EXIT

It looks like it isn't booting from the CD.  Still getting the same error message, which makes me think the boot order isn't right in the Bios possibly?  I see in your original message you said to check that the order was corrrect. How do I check to make sure it is looking to the d: drive before the c: drive when booting.

Thanks again.

Or Press F12 a boot & use the 1 time boot menu to boot to the CD

Ok.  So couldn't get the F12 option to work, but F2 did take me to the bios menu where I changed the boot order, putting the ATA CDROM drive first.  Unfortunately, it's still is giving me the missing GTgina.dll file error and telling me to contact adminstrator to replace it.

I thought I would ask you guys if you have any other suggestions, before I toss this puppy in the garbage and pony up for a new box (not something I wanted to do, yet, but this one is a few years old and kind of a dog).

Thanks...yet again.

That is strange, you should not get an error message like that when booting from the installation CD. The procedure is successfully used to replace any missing system file and should work no matter which file is missing.

Are you sure you are doing it properly?

When you change the boot order in the BIOS,  SAVE and exit
Put the CD in the drive and reboot. Th CD should bootup then and give you the option to "Press any Key to boot from the CD"
