Getting missing drivers after drive replacement

Question

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 running Windows XP Home Edition. Recently my hard drive failed, and a Dell tech replaced it. He reinstalled my Windows and said that I was responsible for the rest of the software. I told him that I had (or so I thought) all the Dell disks which came with my computer.

I have two problems.

MISSING DRIVERS

My Dell E153 Flat Panel Color Monitor will work, but the resolution is bad and cannot be altered. When I checked system information, it said that the video controller (VGA compatible) was not installed.

I have no sound. System information says that the multimedia audio control driver was not installed.

These two devices, along with the Ethernet controller, show up as a yellow question mark in the Device Manager.

Apparently I did not have all the original disks. I went to the Dell Forum and thought that I had downloaded the missing drivers.

COM PORT CONFLICT

My Conexant D850 56K v. 9x DFVc modem is working according to my hardware report. However, it is listed as being on COM 3. When I go to use it, I get an ERROR 633 message saying that the modem is already in use or not configured properly. Another message said that I had a hardware conflict. The Device Manager shows only COM 1.

If you have a CD marked 'Dell Resource', this has your drivers, load it into the cdrom and let it autorun.   If not, Download and  Install drivers in this order only   1. Desktop System Software   2. Chipset   3. Video, you are going to have to Identify what graphics chipset you have in order to install the correct driver.   4. Network   5. Audio     Use this to identify your Video chip http://filehippo.com/download_cpuz/   CPU-Z   Do not install network or audio until you do, post back what video chip you have so I can find the correct driver for you. Go ahead and install #1 and 2

Thanks for the feedback.   I have ordered replacement installment disks from Dell which should have my drivers.   I can't get the video chip set since I still have the modem conflict.  The device manager shows only COM 1, but my modem shows on COM 3.   Sorry to appear to be so ignorant in these items!   DN

Hello,

I have finally been able to spend the proper time on your helpful instructions.

I have installed 1 & 2 (system software, chipset)

I have run CPU-Z. Which is the video chip on the report?. I see no video; the only chips mentioned are Chipset Intel i865P/PE/G/i848P Rev. A2 AND Southbridge Intel 82801EB(ICH5).

I will await your answer before installing 4 & 5 (network, audio).

Video Driver Video: Intel 82 865G Graphics Controller, Driver, Windows 2000, Windows XP         'Chipset Intel i 865P/PE/ G/i848P'   I know, not obvious.

Ok, now that you got this far, good job by the way, make a post over on this board about your Modem/Networking issues. I have installed the 5 drivers in the order requested.   I have cleared up my monitor problem.   When trying to install the network driver, I  got:  'Local Area Connection - A network  cable is unplugged.'  The installation stopped at that point, and I was not asked to reboot.   I have no audio.  The speakers appear to be attached correctly.   The Device Manager shows no more yellow question marks.         MODEM PROBLEM:    When I try to dial up the Internet, I get 'Error connecting to Mindspring.  Opening port.  Error 633.  The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properl.'     When I run MODEM HELPER, I get a 'com port conflict detected.'  It says that I have a software application which is using the modem.  I have loaded very little software and have nothing active that should cause a conflict.   The Device Manager shows only COM 1.  In the Control Panel/Phone and Modem Options/Modem/Advanced Settings for COM 3, I can not change to COM 1 (in use) or COM 2 -->the port has been opened by another application.   Thanks for your help. I'm afraid I know jus enough to be dangerous and an pain in the neck.   Dave N.
