Go to Start|Control Panel|System|Automatic Updates tab and uncheck the item telling Windows to keep your computer up to date using automatic updates. After you do this make sure you visit the Windows Update site regularly to download any Critical Updates that become available.
Your popups may be coming from Messenger. Download and run the little program available
here and see if it corrects the problem.
