Help! - Unhandled win32 exception occurred in svchost.exe

Hello..

Starting today, I am getting the error message: unhandled win32 exception occurred in svchost.exe [772] (the number is different sometimes).

Nothing new has been installed on my laptop (Latitude D820).

The error occurs whenever I try to run the standard Windows Update from Internet Explorer.

Can anyone help?

Thanks
 - will

System file checker would have done this if it was bad.
It may be a problem with Windows update rather than the file in the error itself

Here are some things to do to fix common windows update problems, worth a try, do all of them.

click on the “Start” button then “Run” and enter the following command into the “Run” dialog box
· regsvr32 wuapi.dll
You should then receive a message to say it was successful. The above process then needs to be done for each of the following commands:-
· regsvr32 wups.dll
· regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
· regsvr32 wucltui.dll
· regsvr32 atl.dll
· regsvr32 msxml3.dll

Thanks for the quick reply.

However....I already ran the system file checker.  I even did a restore to an earlier check point.

Can I just replace this file?  I would hate to have to wipe the whole laptop to fix this....ugh.

Thanks again.

I just ran all of those register commands...all were successful...but the error continues.  Sigh

Hello again...

I have tried more things - like removing all of my McAfee virus scan programs - and still the error continues to occur when I try to run the Windows Update.

if anyone can help...that would be great.

thanks
