Help w/ Dell Studio XPS -- Won't Boot to Windows....
I could use some help with this Issue.... The OS is Windows 7 Home Premium on a Dell Studio XPS 8100 -- i7 with 8GB RAM and 1TB Hard-Drive.....
I was doing work, when I experienced a Power Failure. When the Power came back up, I tried to Turn the System on. It never booted to Windows and went directly to Windows Recovery....
I attempted to Boot into Safe Mode by using F8 -- didn't work..... Yes, I am quite familiar with how this should work. I attempted to set the Default Boot, from the Command Line, to have the System boot to Safe Mode. That did not work either....
I attempted to Use System Restore from Windows Recovery. Although I had several Restore Points to choose from, none of these worked. The System continues to Boot into Windows Recovery. The only Error Message I received from Window Recovery (Startup Repair) was: "The Operating System Version is Incompatible with Startup Repair."
Obviously, I do not want to Re-set the System to the Original Factory Settings if I do not have to.... I can Slave the Drive and Save the Documents, but I have Applications that I would lose, that were downloaded when I was a Student -- not to mention the Time involved setting the System and Network back up.
Is there a Recovery CD available that will Repair the OS without affecting my Apps or Documents?
I would certainly appreciate any help or ideas that anyone might have. This is my Home System, but is used extensively for work.
Thanks!!!!
Bill

Hi Bill,
I appreciate that you have tried few steps to fix the issue on your own. If the Hard drive has failed or if it is an Operating system corruption there might be no possibilities of recovering the applications that are installed. At this point of time running a diagnostics will help us to know if there is a Hardware failure on the system.
Kindly find the steps below to perform the H/W diagnostics.
Turn the computer off >restart the computer
At the Dell logo screen, start tapping the F12 key a few times until you see the ‘One Time Boot Menu’ appear.
At the one time boot menu, press the down arrow key to highlight ‘Diagnostic’, and then press Enter to begin the PSA diagnostics.
If the test fails, please make a note of any error codes listed. You can also refer to the link below.

Hi Bill,
0142 error indicates a Hard Drive failure. Private message me the Service Tag of the system so that we could check the warranty status and assist further.
I have added you as a friend. Please accept my friend request by clicking on my name highlighted in blue and then click on “Friends” tab at the top and then click on “Request to Review” and finally click on “Accept” button.

Hi Harish,
I am at work, but I did run the Diagnostic last night. It displayed:
Error Code 0142
Msg: Error Code 2000-0142
Msg: Hard Drive 0 -- self test unsuccessful. Status: 79
The given error code can be used by Dell......
Is this what you Referring to? Are you able to decipher the Codes or will I need to perform more Testing?
It did appear that the Drive was recognized and I could see the Documents Directory..... Any ideas???
Thank-you for your quick response and willingness to help!!!
Bill
