Help with HELP in Win ME

My old Dimension has been used offline for years.  Just recently, I went online with it, and ever since I did my F1 key or my selection of HELP from the Start Menu opens a window which promptly permanently freezes up with the message:

"Help Center failed to initialize. Please notify Microsoft of the following error: -2147143679"

That may not be an exact quote, but the error number is correct.  Before I was online I could look at Dell's very nice Help window with topics and search facilities.  Now I can't do anything except finally close the flag--waving frozen window :-(  Microsoft no longer supports Win ME, and even if they did, I don't know how to report this error.  All I'd like to have is my old help window back.  I don't care about the internet seeking part anyway.  Anyone have any ideas what I might do to get my HELP back?

I'd like to get a new Dell, and hopefully I will eventually, but I just retired and have some financial and health issues that just won't quite allow that right now.  Thanks for the suggestion though :-)

Go the the site below, download and install, MDAC 2.8 SP1. (It will download as a (EXE-File)

Then go to, Microsoft Windows Update Site and download and install - KB911562.

This should correct problem.

I did a google.com search, click "groups" and enter error/2147143679

You'll be surprised at home many have had the same problem, sounds like gator6x4's fix should work, good luck

Hi newbeee.  Yes, I read your message and then went to Google to look.  I believe it found 432 entries.  I am not alone :)  gator6x4's fix worked like  charm.

Downloaded and installed the MDAC file, dl'd and read the KB bulletin.  My HELP is BACK!!  Thank you very much, gator6x4.  I have no idea why it worked, but it did :-)  BTW, my IE6 is already fully patched as is my Win ME up to the July 11 cutoff date.  Thanks again :)
