Help with chipset drivers
A few months ago I went from Windows XP to Windows 7 64bit on my Dell XPS M1730. About a month afterwards, I started to get blue error screens and sought help on fixing them. One forum told me it was Norton Antivirus causing a few of them, uninstalled that and switched to another service. I don't get these error screens as often now, but I am still getting them and was told it was because my drivers are out of date. I got DriverDetective and it shows that I need to manually install chipset drivers.
I looked around, but didn't find much in the way of installing the drivers. Can anyone help me out with a guide or direct me to where I can get info on installing chipset drivers?

Did you run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor before moving to Windows 7? That can sometimes give you an idea as to which programs might not be fully supported by 7 and could be the potential cause of issues down the road. If you installed Windows 7, then reinstalled all the applications you had on XP, one or more of them could be causing the problem - like with Norton. It could be a driver issue too.
Since Windows 7 is not supported on your M1730, you will probably need to get the drivers directly from the manufacturer of your various devices. Intel makes your 965PM chipset, so go to Intel.com and run the scanner that will scan your system for any devices that have updated drivers, including your chipset.

Not that I trust applications like DriverDetective, but IF he does need a chipset driver update for a driver not supplied/updated by Windows Updates, then he won't get it from Dell - he needs to get it from Intel. He asked about updating it, so came the response, but an application could easily be the culprit as well.

Most drivers will be on the Windows 7 installation disk. You really don't need to go to Intel. I did it on a D820 from Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit. Never needed any additional drivers. FWIW I think "drivers" have become the "boogey man" of ther 21st century
