Most can be turned off. Be sure to leave active anything to do with your anti-virus, firewall and spyware software. Running a Google search of each listed item is a good way to determine what can stay and what must go.

Gumba, XP seems to handle much more in the way of startup then previous operating systems. You can select some things not to run at startup through msconfig. If you do a google search for
startup items you can find several sources of lists that will aid in identifying the various programs. Also to uninstall a lot of the extras that came on you Dell you can use this program found
here. I have used this on several new Dells and it has worked well and allows you to check what you want removed.
