In Windows 98, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network, click on the identification tab and enter the name of your computer and workgroup there.  I don't have any idea what you mean about entering access point vs. peer to peer.  There is no such function or setting in any version of Windows.  Do you mean setting up the router in access point mode?  If so, you would only do this if you were using to only share files and printer on a peer to peer network.  Access point mode would not work for sharing an internet connection.  In any event it is something that would be set in the router configuration, not in Windows.

Thanks Steve,

I no longer have this 98 pc, having given it to my dau & family.  I can remember when I did have it that somewhere in the network setup I had a small window in which there was an option to select peer to peer or access point.  Perhpaps that was in Network Neighborhood Properties?

Also where do I name the network? (as opposed to workgroup)?  If I remember correctly it was in that same small window I mentioned above,

No, there is no option in any version of Windows to select peer to peer or access point.  Those kinds of options would only be present for a wireless network adapter or a router.  No such settings are necessary to get a network to work with a router.

There is no place in any version of Windows to "name" the network.  The only settings that matter are computer name and workgroup name.  A wireless network does have a name (ssid), but that is set up in the wireless router, not in Windows.

Thank you for clarifying that.  I use a wireless network at home and thus do have those options.  However, the set up I am asking about is wired.

Here is a link to a screenshot showing those options WITHN WINDOWS on my XP OS.

I see what you mean.  I', not sure that these options would be available in Windows 98 or ME - since both were written before wireless networks were common.  I've never set up a wireless network in 98 or ME, so if the options are added to the networking section they would likely have to be added by the wireless network adpater drivers.  All these options do in Windows XP is tell the software what kinds of networks to look for.  To the network adapters themselves, there should be no difference.

That's correct, at least as far as Win98 is concerned. I have an Orinoco Gold Card (PCMCIA) installed in a Win98 laptop, and the wireless network setup is all done through a Control Panel add-in from the vendor. There's no "Automatically..." or "Preferred" of any sort. If you need to connect to another network, you have to create a connection profile for that network.
