Hi Michael,

The recovery disks will help in resetting the computer to factory settings. And this will lead to data loss in the system.

Before trying to reinstall the OS, can try some troubleshooting steps.

Running the hardware diagnostics can help in checking if there is any hardware problem. Remove all the external devices connected to the laptop. Follow the steps below to run hardware diagnostics.

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Keep tapping the F12 key on the Dell Logo Screen.
  3. From the One time boot menu select Diagnostics and Press Enter.
  4. It runs a test on all the hardware components.
  5. If it test fails please capture the error code and let me know the error code, I would tell you the next course of action.

In case the test passes, follow the next steps.

Try “Last known good configuration” option.

  1. Tap F8 key repeatedly at Dell logo for windows "Advanced Boot Options".
  2. Use the up/down arrow keys to highlight “Last known good configuration “and press enter.
  3. If the last known good configuration does not help, please follow the below mentioned steps.

Check in Safe Mode.

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Keep tapping F8 on the Dell Logo Screen.
  3. Once the computer enters Advanced Boot Option, select Safe Mode.
  4. Press Enter.

Check if the computer is doing the same thing in safe mode and reply.

Hi Nikhil,

Thanks!

I am also facing with the similar issue. A month back my system suddenly rebooted when i tried to install a software, but because of some permission issues i was unable to complete it successfully. The next day, the system crashed and rebooted. I found,

1. My desktop screen, which was full of important folders and data was totally washed out.
2. My Pictures, My Videos, My Documents directory were all totally empty.
3. On logging in getting "octoshapeclient.exe failed error"
4. Personal directories inside the users folder were all washed off.
5. Icons in start menu bar, IE, Accessories and many other directories are blank and throwing the following error as "the item you selected is unavailable. it might have been removed, renamed or moved. Do you want to remove it from the list"
One thing that is of a clue is that, The used space inside the C:\ is of 93Gb. So i doubt, STILL ALL MY PERSONAL FILES ARE INTACT BUT HIDDEN OR something like that.
I tried for most of the usual mode of restoring but i could not. So please Dell/ anyone kindly help, as how can i get back all my files back.
Best Regards
Harish

Hi Harish,

Please boot the system to Safe mode with Networking and try to back-up all the files.

To check in Safe Mode with Networking:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Keep tapping F8 on the Dell Logo Screen.
  3. Once the computer enters Advanced Boot Option, select Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter.

Check if the files are available for back-up in safe mode with networking.

You may also try to Clean Boot the system by following the steps from this link: http://dell.to/1ee6IMz

Please check and reply for further help.
