if it is "autodownloading", i would try turning "automatic updates" off.. you can turn off automatic updates by going to start/control panel/"system"/automatic updates..

I have not seen the Auto Updates working, but if you right click the icon in the Taskbar do you get a menu.
Maybe it has something like "Cancel download" or "Stop download"

If that does not work try just left clicking ( double clicking ) the icon.

How long have you been at it?  Dialup or broadband?

almost 6 hours!  Dial up...no DSL out here.  Satellite too expensive.  I have gone thru the control panel and turned off the Auto Updates.  It was only at 43%.  But if I turn auto updates back on then it picks up
at 43%.  I've been told that I can't cancel the download.  Is SP2 worth it?  I keep up-to-date with auto
updates from McAfee.

It's always recommended to install the most current service pack (and other hot fixes/patches). SP2 is huge (hundred of MBs). What you can do to stop "Automatic Update" is to stop and disable "Automatic Update" service in the Services applet. Re-enable it after you order and install from SP2 CD.

If you are concerned with Security, then yes SP2 is worth it.  Be patient and just let it finish.  There is no way to block it now.

you can order a free win xp sp2 cd from microsoft.. i think they will ship it to you quickly, once you have ordered it.. here is the webpage for ordering the win xp sp2 cd..

i think that you could download win xp sp2 from the windows updates website in about 9 hours on a 56k dialup connection.. it took me 3 hours to download win xp sp1 on a 56k dialup connection, and it was about 1/3 the size of win xp sp2, 30 mbs vs 90 mbs..

That's not really good advice to turn off auto Updates.  Let the download finish and then you can burn your own copy.
