How to change drive Letters

I added a new 2nd hard drive replacing the one I had before (I upgraded from 120 to 250GB). Before I had the letter C for the main OS drive and D for the 2nd HD. Now I still have C for the main OS drive but the letter E instead of D fot he 2nd HD. How can I change it back to D? Will this put at risk the HD's content?

Thanks.

I checked Help & Support & it says;

Be careful when making drive-letter assignments because many MS-DOS and Windows programs make references to a specific drive letter. For example, the path environment variable shows specific drive letters in conjunction with program names.

Windows uses Drive letter in path ie: C:\WINDOWS\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
so might not be good idea if Disk contains some Windows Programs.

To change CD-Drive letter right click on CD-ROM ( bottom right pane)  & select "Change Drive Letter"

The letter D is assigned to the CDROM drive, so when I click on "Change Drive Letter" in Computer Management the letter D is not listed. How can I cahnge the CDROM's drive letter so to have D available for the HD?

Use Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage , Disk Management  but usally  Disk partitions & CD_ROM have drive letters.
Usually CD-Drive is D:  so check 1st  & right click on Volume Partition & select "Change Drive Letter....."

Gary, before doing this, is it a risky operation? I mean, can the drive's content be erased by doing this? Thanks.

As far as I know it doesn't affect Disk contents , but you could wait for further confirmation by others.

I have no programs installed in that drive, I only have data (music, pictures, programs). Am I safe then?

Should be OK then but if you have shortcuts to Drive Folder/files they will have to be changed to show new partition letter.
If you find problems you can always change Drive partition letter back to old letter.

Change CD from D to F.

Change 2nd hard drive from E to D.

Change CD from F to E.

Note that older programs that you have installed that use the CD drive may not run properly, if so you may have to change the command line for them to use the E drive.

What about Roxio or Nero? Will they automatically recognize the CD and/or CDRW drive after changing the drive letters?

Rick:

This is my current configuration:

A: Floppy drive

C: Main drive

D: CDROM drive

E: 2nd HD

F: DVDRW drive

H,I,K,L: Removable drives (Sandisk external flash card reader)

J: Virtual DVD/CD drive (Alcohol 120%)

So what is the suggestion in order to change the 2nd HD from E to D?

Thanks.

Change D to Q, R, S...  Doesn't matter.

Change E to D.

Change first one to E.

Keep in mind that the letters ONLY matter to you.  XP doesn't care what they are.  Some old programs may not like the change IF they use the CD drive when running.

thanks Rick, everything is fine now. All I needed to do is to correct some shortcuts in the Start Menu so that they invoked D instead of E.
