How to get the old Windows Vista Key?

Hi,

I have a problem, because I would like to install privious OS which has been installed orginally (Win Vista Home Premium), currently I have Windows 7. I didn't found any sticker with original Windows key, but some time ago I wrote the key into my notepad. The problem is that I have 20 chars wriiten instead of 25. Is it possible to contact Dell support and they tell my 5 missing chars? I am wondering wheather Dell stores somewhere original Windows key associated with the product in their product? Hm, any clues?

Dell XPS m1330 Red edition.

Why? You should clean install Windows 7 directly. See Windows Reinstallation Guide/A Clean install of Windows 7:

This guide will also instruct you how to clean install Windows Vista. Also a Dell Windows Vista Reinstallation DVD will use System locked Preinstallation inputting the Dell SLP key and activating when the correct Dell BIOS is detected thus you don't need to know your Vista product key.

Hi,

well, I am going to sell this laptop and I would like to leave original Windows at the m1330. Win7 belongs to me and I would like to use them in new machine.

Okay that makes more sense. You will not be able to use the factory internal partition since you manually installed Windows 7.

See Windows Reinstallation Gide/A Clean install of Windows Vista: http://philipyip.wordpress.com/dell-community-forums/

If you have the Windows Vista Reinstallation DVD, it will input the Dell SLP key and automatically activate when installed via the Dell BIOS. This means you do not need to physically enter the product key. This system should also have a Media Direct DVD.

I advise carrying out the optional Step 7a on this system and securely wiping the hard drive this will make any data you have on the hard drive is irrecoverable in comparison to the Windows format. Step 7b is necessary to carry out before installation of Windows Vista so that the media direct program can be correctly installed (Step 14a).
