How to install 2nd Operating System

I have bought a Dell desktop (dimension 9150 with Windows XP home edition) and I want to install Windows 2000 server as second operating syatem. I used partition magic to partition my hard disk. I got to know from the dell website that it is easy to use DOSA cd to install the second operating system. But I didn't get that cd with my computer. I don't have a floppy drive on my computer also. Can anybody let me know the way to install the windows 2000 server? If I should download any softwares, please let me know the exact links for them.

Same problem here, I made a new partition on my hard-drive, and tried to set a new Operating system on it, but the CD says it has to be setup from a bootup-sequence but when I try to reboot , my dimension 9150 will not start up from my CD.

Any help is welcome,

Ronny

Kurinchikamuran and Bluesman2

See this link for setting up dual-boot system with Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/multiboot.mspx

Bluesman, to boot from CD on the 9150, you must first set the CD as the first boot device in BIOS setup.  When you restart your computer, you must press F12 while the Dell logo is still on the screen and select the CD ROM as your boot device.  You will then see a "Press any key to boot from CD" message.  Press any key.  I assume you are using Windows 2000 for second partition also.  If not, see these links.

Dual booting various versions of Windows:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289283

Dual boot XP, DOS, and other Windows versions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306559/EN-US/

Dual boot XP and Linux (Debian) : http://linux.dell.com/  Check into Mailing List and post question.

Note:  Make sure you have your Windows XP CD and Driver Disks.  Dell PC Restore by Symantec (CTRL-F11) will not work if master boot record of system partition is altered.

That's my problem; I can't have a boot from a cd-rom drive installled on my system.

All I have when I press F12 is :

INTEL ARRAY

ONBOARD OR USB CD-ROM DRIVE

SYSTEM SETUP

HARDDRIVE DIAGNOSTICS

BOOT TO UTILITY PARTITION

I just have this PC for a couple of weeks, and this is what I have :

Dimension 9150 with a Intel Pentium D 2.8 GHz; 2 GB memory, 2*160 GB Harddisk in Raid configuration.

What I will try to do is the following :

Windows XP Pro is installed, But I downloaded the Windows XP 64 Bit from Microsoft as a trial version.

I don't want too loose anything, so I tought I make a new partition, and install Win XP64 on this new partition, just to see what this system has to offer.

When I put this Win XP64 in my DVD-Rom drive it says that it has to boot off from a startup.

And here's my problem, I can't choose my DVD-Rom drive as start-up.

I don't have that DOSA cd either, where can you download that?

With those new versions I don't have a floppy drive too.

Bluesman,
DOSA (Dell OpenManage Server Assistant) CD to my knowledge is not available for download.   It's for PowerEdge, PowerVault, etc. server platforms, not XPS/Dimensions.  When you press F12, highlight Onboard or USB CD ROM Drive, and press Enter you should be able to boot from the CD in your DVD-ROM drive.

You say you don't want to lose anything.  As I mentionned earlier, if you modify the master boot record on your system drive, you will not be able to restore your system with the Dell PC Restore by Symantec partition (that's the one you access by pressing CTRL-F11 at the Dell logo to restore your system to an as-shipped condition).  If you do not have your XP Pro, application, utility and driver CDs, you're going to be up the proverbial estuary without the conventional mode of locomotion.

You might want to read the Intel Matrix Storage Manager help files before trying to install the XP 64.

I tried to boot using windows 2000 cd, but when the system try to format the partition, it ask for some drivers to continue. I haven't floppy drives, so can't I install windows 2000 without installing the drivers.

Kumaran,

Your 9150 has Serial ATA drives.  You will need to create the F6 driver disk   Instructions on how to create and use the F6 driver disk are here:<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

Hi Tony

Thank you very much for ur guidance. I try as u said and let u know if I have any problem.

By the by, my hard disk has 3 primary partitions and an extended partition. All of these primary partitions are already occupied(2 for dell utility and 1 for windows xp). When I install windows 2000 server, don't I have to create any other primary partitions for that.(I know I can't create another primary partition). But to do so, I will have to deleate an exsisting primary partition. So can I continue as it is now, and install the windows 2000 server os in a logical drive without changing any primary drives.

I am looking forworward to hear from u soon.

Kumaran,
Yes.  I would leave the existing partitions (Dell Utility Partition, PC Restore Partition, and Windows XP partition).  The fourth partition could be formatted as a logical drive and the Windows 2000 operating system could be installed on it.
