How to install fonts from my Windows XP CD?

How do i install fonts from my Windows XP CD?

the reason why i want to do this is because i have about 1500 fonts in my fonts folder, most of which are just rubbish. programs like fireworks and photoshop take a while to load all those fonts. i can delete my fonts directory and keep the default XP fonts only.

Thanks

Can't find Fonts on XP CD so you could delete Fonts Folder or contents then do a Windows Repair from boot of XP CD. Not the 1st R but start Install then select the next R for Repair.

Be advised there are some severe consequences to doing a repair/reinstall. You will lose any Dell factory installed Operating Manuals, and any Software Instruction Manuals unique to your system, plus any Micro$oft Updates generated after your system was initially manufactured.

TiNiB,

All the fonts included in Windows XP have a file date of 8/18/2001. If you open your fonts folder and sort the fonts by file date, you can delete all those with different dates which will leave you with only the Windows XP native fonts.

Hi

thanks for all your replies.

Denny your idea seems the best, but windows tells me that theres only 64 fonts with that date.

if you go to this page: http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/winxp.htm?fname=%20&fsize=

its gives you the list of fonts that comes with XP. which is alot more than my 64.

how do i get these?

does anyone know someone whos done a fresh install of XP with all the fonts installed so i can ask them to send them to me :)

TiNiB,

64 fonts is correct.

I took a screen capture after installing XP only and XP with Office Small Business.

XP + Office Sm. Business Fonts 1.

XP + Office Sm. Business Fonts 2.

I have done a Windows Repair & only lost Windows Updates. ?
I still have DELL "User & System Guides" & also Microsoft SBSI Folder (Microsoft Interactive Training) all of which aren't on the XP CD. If thats what you refer to.
As I understand a Windows Repair from XP CD only replaces the Windows Files , doesn't delete other files.?

I know if you do a Clean Install you loose all the above.
-------------
Edit:
Come to think of it a Windows Repair probably wouldn't work as it should only replace the XP Fonts not delete other Fonts added by other programs.

Hi Gary,
I'm speaking from actual experience. About 15 months ago Dell Tech Support advised me to do a repair/reinstall for a problem I was having (I can't recall exactly what it was), but when I did the repair/reinstall, WinXP SP1 and 36 patches had to be downloaded and reinstalled. I made posts to this forum back then and learned that I was not the only one to lose the Dell Factory installed User Guides, Help and Support Solution Center (different from the download that is available from Dell Downloads in that it was unique to my I8100) Instruction Manuals for the DVD software, and other items I have since forgot. Fortunately the SBSI's (WinXP, and M$ Office SBE) were not effected.

Curios.?

Did you Repair from within Windows (ie: insert XP CD when Windows was started & select Install > Upgrade (repair) from displayed Menu.
Or did you boot from XP CD start install then select Repair.

As my results are different to yours or perhaps I'm confused as I have two Computers & think I have Repaired this one from XP CD boot , which left other DELL installed files intact.
Pretty sure it was this Computer as I had to delete the Windows XP Home & had on extra partition before XP Pro CD would give me choice to Repair WIndows XP Pro on other partition.

I'm sorry to say I have no idea. I would have to check my email archives to see if I still have those instructions from Dell Tech Support. I have said before I think those files are still somewhere on my hard drive, but the file paths have been broken and I'm not computer savvy enough to find and link them back up. First of all I wouldn't know what to look for.

OK thanks , perhaps there is a difference between Repair from within Windows & boot of XP CD Repair.
Seems like a Repair from within Windows replaces Windows Directory's (Folders) & contents whereas a boot Repair only replaces Windows files.
Will check next time I do a Windows Repair.

Hi Gary,
That would be a very interesting set of circumstances. I would appreciate it very much if you would let me know how you make out. Kind of makes me wonder what Micro$oft understands should happen using the different methods. Thanks again.
