How to repair corrupted MediaDirect without formatting hard disk

My MediaDirect is corrupted.
Now when I try to boot to MediaDirect, I get an error message like:
config.sys is missing

Dell Support advises me to repartition my hard disk to reinstall MediaDirect.

Is there another less painful way ?

Hi

You don’t mention computer make/model/OS or Dell MediaDirect version?

For Dell links to MediaDirect Repair Utility click here

A helpful Notebook forum post here, scroll down to part 4

Subject information from Dan Goodells web site is here

Alternatively, if your computer has PC Restore Symantec utility (a.k.a. DSR)?

You could use it but first save/back up all your personal files/data to CD/flash drive

DSR restores your computer to “out of box” system condition

You will then need to reinstall all software/hardware added between purchase & DSR used dates, includes Windows Updates & AV DATs

Hi BELL BOY,

Thanks for the many useful links.

I just called Dell Support and they said that the Dell MediaDirect Repair Utility does not work for MediaDirect 3 (the version on my Inspiron 640m or e1405).

Do you know any links to repair MediaDirect 3 ?

I don't have DSR and am looking for ways not to have to touch my Windows XP Pro partition.
Since MediaDirect is on a separate partition, I actually hope to find some resource that can just treat that partition.

Hi kosiew

OK, now know it’s MD 3.0

Assume MD Repair Utility is no use because of different HDD partitioning for MD 3.0

Are you sure your 640m doesn’t have the DSR utility?

640m User Manual here, unless you have damaged DSR by reformatting your HDD?

Disclaimer “DSR may not be available in certain countries nor on certain computers”

If you don’t have DSR utility   :smileymad:

Then it looks like you are stuck with a reinstall job as explained by Dell Support

Hi Bell Boy, I am sure I don't have DSR because installed XP over the shipped Vista. Thanks anyway.
