How to stop Desktop background being changed?

Hi guys,

A local youth club has asked if I can help after their IT funding and support has dried up.

They have given me administrator rights but I am rusty on server and desktop support and would value help.

The basic idea is t to stop the desktop backgrounds being changed.  I recollect at the back of my mind that it is opossible to use a common background from the server.

The desktops are using MS Vista and the server is MS  server 2003.

Each of the Vista desktops requires the user to lock on with a common user name which does not have admin rights, and of course my admin acccess allows everything. It is one Poweredge server, local domain all in one room.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Pete

Doing a google search for how to do this, I came up with THIS

But, it's a function of the PC, not a server function.

Thank you fireberd.

I did a quick search previously, looking for server info on profile, but your info is very helpful and may resolve my question.    I'll keep the question live until done.

Thanks

Pete

As long as these PC's are in a Domain, it is very simple to set and lock the user background using Group Policy.

Enable "Prevent Changing Desktop Background" in:

User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Control Panel/Personalization

Enable and Set Desktop Wallpaper in:

User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Desktop/Desktop

Thanks TheFlash1932

Appreciated!

Issue 2

Apparently they were advised by a collegue of the previous IT support that there were some issues with profiles  mixing XP/Vista computers apparently, and they were advised not to network newer Windows 7 as part of the Server 2003 domain.

I quickly googled and found there may have/still be some  issues re Policies  with W7..

What can I do to avoid problems ?

Remove existing profiles and recreate?

Forget profiles in some way?

There are no issues with Windows 7 GP that I have encountered ... differences, yes - "issues", no.  If you are using Roaming Profiles, there may be issues - I have done little with roaming profiles.  When not using roaming profiles, however, there are no issues at all with running XP and 7 on the same domain.  I would, however, recommend creating a different OU for the Windows 7 computers (for GP purposes), as not all policies configurable for Windows 7 apply to XP, and vice versa.  Use user loop-back processing to ensure User Configuration settings are applied to users not of that OU.
