I cannot update Windows

Question

I'm running windows vista ultimate on a xps 410. When I tried to update Windows I get an error code 80246008. I went to the Windows website and went through the troubleshooting tips. It said something about trying to start Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), but when I tried to start it I get an error: 1068 'the dependencyservice or group failed to start.' I went through all of the troubleshooting tips with no luck. I would appreciate some help.

I had a similar problem, but the error code were two diferents, one was 80245003 and the other I don't remember, but both of them I fixed doing this

Disable the Windows Update Service (Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services). Just stop the service.
Navigate to: C:/Windows/ (or wherever you Windows system is)
Find the folder named: “SoftwareDistribution”
Rename that folder to something like “SoftwareDistribution.old”
Create a new folder called “SoftwareDistribution”
Go back to your Services panel and start the Windows Update service
Rerun Windows Update

thanks for the replies guys, but no dice. I still get the same error message after deleting the folder in safe mode, rebooting, and trying to update again.

okay, something weird happened when I tried to register qmgr.dll. an error message came up saying 'the module qmgr.dll was loaded but the entry point dllregisterserver was not found. make sure qmgr.dll is a valid DLL or OCX file and try again.' I registered qmgrprxy.dll just fine.

Hi all, There is another way to do it. See this thread. It is much stright forward than what is suggested by Microsoft. I did this way and now updates working perfectly. well this is really weird. I've followed all the steps exactly and none of them did the trick. I used windiz and that sad that there were no updates needed for my computer, but Windows update said I had three updates. I may just have to reinstall the OS. Now that I think of it, the exact same thing that happened before. I'm completely flustered and you probably are too. I tried reinstalling the video drivers with no luck and I followed step eight exactly. when I ran the Windows update agent said it did not have to do anything. I appreciate all the help you have given me. If you happened to think of anything else just let me know. Thanks again, Jason
