IE7 Slow if Protected Mode Turned On

Internet Explorer in Vista is extremely slow when "Protected Mode" is turned on. Runs normally fast when Protected Mode is turned off. ( Protected Mode is unique to Vista, not used in XP, and is turned on in Inernet Explorer by default )

Turn Protected Mode off in TOOLS * INTERNET OPTIONS * SECURITY * Uncheck Enable Protected Mode for all 4 zones.

The internet has many postings on this problem, it is widespread and no solutions to date. Disabling Phishing Filter, add-ons, pop-up blocker no help. Uninstalling McAffee no help.

It is soooo slow that it takes 30 seconds or more to load any site, where Firefox loads a site in less than 3 seconds.

Has anyone found a fix? Should I contact DELL or Windows Tech Support?

No fix, but......

Been there, done that.  I just turn the darn thing off, have a good anti virus software, good firewall, spyware program, and do not open attachments in my email, and never a problem  :smileyhappy:

I always have Protected Mode turned off. You don't need it. It works much better without it.

Have you looked at this thread?

In short, turn off Firewall in McAfee & turn off Phishing Filter in IE 7.

thats a bit silly isn't it? turning off the firewall in mcafee, it would mean now that there would be no firewall enabled, UNLESS you have a hardware version of a firewall,

I agree, it sounds silly. I haven't stated it clearly. I mean only turn McAfee Firewall off but leave Vista's Firewall on.

I am not sure whether turning McAfee Firewall on that automatically turns off Vista's firewall or not. I have tried Windows Vista RC2 few months ago so my memory is kinda a blur. I doubt about it. Do you have any reference I can read it?

Here is a link regarding to the slow Internet speed on Windows Vista.

Hi,
I do not have any issues with the speed of internet access.
My Procected Mode is ON.

I have McAfee that came with the computer when I bought with my XP MCE SP-2 in Jan 2007.

I had the option to upgrade mine to VISTA OS through Dell's promotion and that I did in March2007.
After that I had to revisit the McAfee site to get my Vista version updated.

Now,
Fire Wall on my security centre reads as follows:
"Windows firewall and McAfee Personal Firewall both report that they are turned on."

Every morning when I first turned on my computer, McAfee automaticallychecks for the latest Personal firewall and other filters[spam etc]

I do not have any problems.  I wonder as to why some are experienceing problems?

right if they are saying that they are both on then go into thw windows firewall which is in the control panel and turn it off, you will need administrator privelages to do this. This might also solve your problems.
