Inspiron 1000 - Operating System CD missing
I have an Inspiron 1000 bought in late 2004. I am having a hard drive i/o errors and want to try reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling everything before I try a new hard drive. The manual says to use the Operating System CD--which did not come with my computer. In the forums I have found steps to create this cd, however the DELL OS Recovery options in accessories is not on my computer. Another forum said to hold down the ctrl key and f12 on startup....that does nothing. I called to try to order a new disk, but they told me I had to "upgrade" to Service pack 2 (which I already have a copy of the service pack 2) at a cost of $104. That sounds like buying a new copy of Windows XP to me.
In another forum statement, I found that for a short while dell did not ship this laptop with the operating system cd and that tech support should provide one if requested. I cannot send tech support a message as my warranty is out. Any suggestions and how to proceed?:smileysad:

If your system was made in late 2004 PC Restore is available to you. Although this will require you to back up everything you have added to the system, reinstalling XP would do so, as well and since you merely want to evaluate the hard drive it should do nicely. The procedure for running PC Restore is here.
As far as obtaining an XP CD, contact Dell at one of the links in this post and request an XP reinstallation CD. Dell has been known to provide CDs to users of systems beyond warranty.
