I have a Inspiron 6400, which I recently had some problems with. When turning on windows I encountered a stop error due to a corrupted driver, system would not load. I attempted to repair the registry hive using recovery console. However c:\windows\tmp\system , c:\windows\tmp\system.bak , c:\windows\tmp\security and c:\windows\tmp\security.bak could not be found.
So I thought to myself, Hey! why don't I just install windows on another partition and extract the missing files from the system volume information folder. So I did so (inadvertently destroying the DSR partition in the process *cries*). I copied the needed files from one of the restore points and copied them to the tmp folder. Unfortunately this did not work either, after going through the same process in the registry console I now encounter a stop error that states the software hive is corrupted.
So I decided to sacrifice my files and just reinstall the OS using an XP media center Edition cd I got from a friend. Now I'm having trouble finding/Installing the correct drivers.
I went to the dell driver/downloads page and downloaded, what I thought were the right drivers. however when I try and install them I get an error message stating "The RPC server is unavailable". I assume this means the Drivers from the dell site require some form of web authentication??
Right now I'm starting to feel a little desperate :(
I'd greatly appreciate it if some one could help me locate the drivers I will need. Or if there is any way possible to recover the .gho file.
I'd suggest a clean install of XP, followed by the chipset driver and notebook system software. Oh, and if the CD you borrowed isn't from Dell, then all bets are off and you need to contact Dell for a CD.
