Inspiron 640m, pci.sys STOP error 0x0000007e when installing XP Pro

Question

I just received the Inspiron 640m pre-loaded with Vista, and I'm trying to make it a dual boot with Win XP pro but getting the following BSOD error when attempting to install XP from the install CD: STOP: 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0xf748e0bf, 0xf78da208, 0xf78d9f08) pci.sys - Address f748e0bf base at f7487000, Datestamp 3b7d855c I searched Google and this Dell support site and so far have done the following: - disabled ALL non-needed peripherals in BIOS (NIC, USB support, etc.) as well as the standby/wake-up features - shrunk the main Vista partition and created a second primary partition with Gparted utility (confirmed Vista sees the new partition/drive) Any ideas? Will I need to blow away all of the partitions and start with XP, then Vista? Or is this simply a h/w compatibility issue? Thanks in advance for your help. Rob

First of all it is better to have the older OS installed first.

XP installation problems
If your XP installation CD is only XPSP1 you will get the pci.sys error
You'll need Windows XP SP2 to support a PCI-Express graphics card.

If you are using only PCI-Express graphics card, the only choice is to boot from the complete edition of Windows XP SP2.
