Installed Windows XP...having trouble with software and drivers

I recently reinstalled windows xp and everything seemed fine until I had to install the drivers and other software by cd.  I have a dell dimension 2350 (about 3 years old) and I am able to download these, but still having trouble getting on the internet and sound problems.  There are certain programs I do not want to install such as Norton and others.  I was connected through a high speed internet connection that went through a cable box, router, and connected into the back by ethernet. I was able to install a modem, but everytime I try to connect it always asks for a phone number.  It's almost to the point where I'm just going to bring it into a technician, but really don't want to spend all the money.  It is probably something very simple and would cost me more than doing it myself. Must I install all the programs on these disks and would it be a one-step process or do I have to install each individually? Can anyone help me on this matter?  Thank you.

P.S.-Should I use a FAT32 or NTFS file system?  (Quick or regular?)

Should I install xp using the regular reinstall cd or the "including service pack 1" cd?

Immediately after installing Windows XP (you should use the one with SP1 included and use the NTFS files system with quick formatting), you need to install the chipset drivers for your motherboard.  These drivers are required before Windows can install drivers for devices integrated on the motherboard, like the video adapter, network adapter, and sound card.

would these chipset drivers be located on the disks that came with the computer? And is it really necessary to create a partion before installation of xp.  If so, how big should it be?

Yes, the chipset drivers should on the Dell Resource CD or it could be called the Dell Drivers and Utilities CD.  It is not neccessary to create a partition if one already exists, but you should format that partition to get rid of everything on it so you can do a clean install of Windows.
