Installing Handwriting/Speech Recognition

Hi, My Dell PC did not come installed with Handwriting/Speech Recognition. How can I install it? I have determined that it is not installed via the method described in mk:@MSITStore:C:\WINDOWS\Help\langbar.chm::/langbar_pen_install.htm I do not have any licences for using Microsoft Office to install via the method described in that article. Is there other ways without using MS Office? Thanks.

Adammw,

Installing Speech Recognition software is one thing.  Handwriting Recognition is another.  Depending upon your version of XP, you might want to look at this article:  http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/moskowitz_02september23.mspx  Vista users might want to look at this article:

As noted int the first article, the Microsoft Speech Recogniton Software Development Kit 5.1 includes the Speech Recognition Engine for free, but is not normally recommended for end users.   It is available here:  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5e86ec97-40a7-453f-b0ee-6583171b4530&DisplayLang=en  This will add Speech Recognition to Notepad, Wordpad, etc.

Might be much simpler to download the e-Speaking 30-day trial version and give it a try.  It's available here:  http://www.e-speaking.com/  And it's only $14 if you decide to buy.

VERY good substitute for MS Office is Open Office available from www.openoffice.org.  Unfortunately, no speech recognition capability as yet to my knowledge.

Handwriting recognition software is a little more expensive.  For example, you might want to check out MyScript's trial offer:  http://www.visionobjects.com/handwriting_recognition/buynotes2.htm

Hope this info helps.

Tony
