You may want to slipstream the latest Service Pack and SATA Driver. For best results follow my wiki Windows Reinstallation Guide/A Clean Install of Windows XP:
I did install the new Seagate 160 GB Hard Drive and used the Dell Windows XP Operating System disk to install the operating system. It did work just as it did before when I was reformatting the old Hard Drive.
The computer is working OK now with the new Hard Drive installed.
