Installshield fails on Setup for Quickbooks

Question

I am trying to install Quickbooks Accounting on my Inspiron 6400. The install fails with error:

InstallShield (R) Setup Launcher has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

According to quickbooks,

"It looks like that you may have a problem with your install shield software:

One of 2 things:

Try and delete all the system temp folder contents, to access them: Go to Start – Run then in the open field type: %temp% and click on OK. Not this, I tried it.

Go to the installshield website http://www.macrovision.com/products/installation/installshield.htm and search for the error message, as you might need an update to your current version.

Macrovision suggest to contact manufacturer who will have purchased product from them! I have tried unsuccessfully to find how to update/repair my installshield from Dell but....

Anybody have any ideas PLEASE!!

What is the exact product name and version?

Edited to add: Don't worry about the above. I was thinking of Windows Vista rather than XP. Try the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Then try to install Quickbooks again.

Great idea, but unfortunately the Quickbooks program is not listed by the cleanup utility :(

Ozact,   If you are trying to install Quickbooks Pro 2007 and you are running Norton or McAfee Internet Security, you must turn off the firewall.during the installation.    Tony

I'm actually trying to install Quickbooks Accounting (trial version but that makes no difference). I've also tried QB Easystart, but that also fails to install.   I use AVG and no firewall (have NAT on router).   The problem is that it never gets to the point where QB would try to access anything. Installshield is failing when it trys to load the install script as it never gets to run anything. Yet this only happens with QB.   Very confusing.

Ozact,   You might want to take a look at this:  http://knowledgebase.quickbooks.ca/detail.php?qbid=QB1058&product=32&buid=QB&cat=Install/Convert   Your problem may be caused by the Dell support.exe program also.   Let us know how you fare.   Tony

Thanks Tony, intertesting article but not it. Let me tell you how I fixed it.

Step 1. I Unzipped the self-extracting download to a folder

Step 2. I modified the SETUP.INI file in that folder by removing the line I've struck out below

Somehow, that has allowed it to install, I've gone through the setup and the trial activation. How did I work this out - a gut feeling about something from QB not being setup quite right :)

Ozact,   Hey, as long as you got it installed.  Might be interesting to look at the registry and see if another installed program had the same Product ID.  Belarc Advisor might shed some light since it can list off Product IDs of certain installed programs.   Will definitely keep a copy of your post in my How To folder in case I run across a similar problem.   Good luck.   Tony
