Internal Error #2718
I have never gotten a resolution to this problem, though I did post it earlier here. I saw on another site where a person had the same exact problem. Here is his post. Unfortunately there are no responses.
Earthlink Uninstall Problem
After cancelling my earthlink internet access, I went to add/remove programs to rid my system of their 275mb buggy software--but their uninstaller failed.....so I tried to remove all references from program files and the registry.....What I am left with now is an annoying pop up which states "windows installer is preparing to install- earthlink pop-up blocker"; then an error message #2718 - these both will appear 2-3 times while trying to delete---this occurs at startup, when opening msie, my computer, others.......it can be stopped by disabling allow 3rd party plug ins in ie tools but this stops other wanted activity as well....................Do you have any helpful ideas? The operating system is windows xp professional.
Thanks;
It's pretty pathetic that one program can cause such problems and no one seems to have a fix. Can anyone here guide me? I sure would like some help!

No problem. I knew what you meant. But I have now done what you suggested and it uninstalled, but the problem still exists. I have cleaned the registry of anything connected to Earthlink, still the problem exists. Any more suggestions?

Thanks. I did a search and then deleted everything with Earthlink in the filename. I then downloaded the registry cleaner you led me to, and ran it. I searched the registry and found many entries with earthlink in them. I deleted them all. I'm so sorry to say that my problem is still there. And Earthlink cannot help. They are trained monkeys, and if it isn't in their scripted answer, they will walk you around robin hood's barn, but you just never get anywhere. I've been there and done that, and that's why you will never see me using Earthlink for any reason. They could give it to me and I wouldn't take it!
I hope you aren't out of ideas!

An update: the problem appears to be resolved.
For anyone who might need the information: I was offered the following link from a person on Tech Republic. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but so far I am rid of the problem.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=%2Fdirectory%2Fworldwide%2Fen-gb%2Futility2.asp
I used the instructions on that website and specifically here's what I did. The offending registry entry was 62329568-19B5-43CF-9524-3EE4DD709D01 (that's the entry that was in the error message and when I manually deleted it from the registry, it always came back). I got the Windows Support Tools off my install CD, and then at a command prompt I entered msizap T {62329568-19B5-43CF-9524-3EE4DD709D01}. So far so good.
