Internal Modem not recognised pci or isa

Hi,
I have an Intel se440bx MB with a 450mhz PII processor, 128mb ram.
I have just install win 98se and cannot get any sign of the internal pci modem.
I have updated the bios to version 12 (latest version) and tried all types of differnent settings in the bios.
I have tried to install the drivers which works but there is no sign of a modem being installed on any com port (1 ,2 or 3).
I have updated win 98 with as many critical updates as I could find on the microsoft web site.

I put an ISA robotics modem in to the computer and this is not recognised also, it seems that the pci slots and isa slots are not functioning, although com port 3 was added when I put the isa modem in.
Any ideas on how to solve this problem will be gratefully received, otherwise I shall have to buy an external usb modem.

Thanks
Terry

Assuming that you're referring to a Dell system (always helpful information to include, along with the specific system model), have you run the Dell Diagnostics tests to determine whether there have been any hardware failures?  Details are in your system documentation under "Solving problems."

I've got the same system and the same problem on Win98. It always used to work fine up until this year (my system is 4 years old now), now it is like it can't recognize that internal modem card anymore. So, I just put on a serial US Robotics 56K External modem and it recognizes it and uses the standard modem driver fine.

I've done some manual diagnostics according to Windows Help on my COM ports in DOS and it says now that I don't have a COM (x) at all. (Where (x) is the number of the internal COM port for the internal modem. I can't remember which number.)

I'm sure you'll be able to find a spare modem from someone or some junk collection company that still works. IT people have outdated spare stuff that pack-rats like me keep anyway.

Thanks for the post.
I solved my problem, which was caused because the correct drivers were not on the driver cd supplied with the computer.
I downloaded the correct drivers and the modem was recognised and now works well.
Cheers
