Internet Explorer--Cannot Find Website

Everything worked fine on my machine until about a month ago; I had no problems of any kind!
But then for some strange reason IE cannot find a website (page not found).  Everyone else can find it but me!!  You can find it also (I'm sure).  Http://www.gwinnettcounty.com  It's my county government.  I've contacted the tech, at the site, and he cannot solve the problem.   I can go to any website but this.  Note: I'm using CompuServe dialup which can find the site, but I cannot login.  I also tried Firefox with no success.  I have done all the cleanup work to my machine, i.e. Chkdsk, Defrag, eliminate files not needed, etc.  I've done everything to IE that I know to do, with no success.  I even went into security sites and entered  this site as trusted, with no success.  I dropped my security, deleted cookies and history etc with no success.

Here is my configuration:

Dimension 4400
Windows XP Home (SP2)  (always updated)
Internet Explorer 6

CompuServe dialup ISP
Spybot
SpywareBlaster
Adaware
Windows AntiSpyware (beta)
AVG Antivirus
Zone Alarm Firewall (Windows Firewall Disabled)

I've had the computer since new.

This is not a real important issue, but it is nuisance and a challenge!

Anyone have any ideas????  :smileysad:

Does this work? That is the URL of the page that loaded when I clicked on your link. It may be that they have changed it and that somewhere along the line you are not being redirected.

Thanks, but that didn't work!  But let's keep trying.  See insert:  (there's nothing wrong with the site).  Note: I can bring it up with CompuServe, and can click on things in the page, but I cannot click to register.  I get a message that the site refuses to let me in.  It looks like I have malware, but if I do, all my security software cannot find it!  I thought about downloading another copy of IE 6, but I'm not sure that's the solution.

The page cannot be displayedThe page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

Please try the following:

  • Click the Refresh button, or try again later.
  • If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.
  • To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
  • See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
    1. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
    2. On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
    3. Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
  • Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
  • If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
  • Click the Back button to try another link.

the link that you posted did not work for me.. i question if a government site would have a ".com" extension.. i found another website, with google, that said it was the official website for gwinnett county, www.co.gwinnett.ga.us/ , but it wouldn't work for me, either..

When I click on register it opens this page:

https://www.co.gwinnett.ga.us/cgi-bin/gwincty/egov/ep/register.do

does that work?

If you are already registered and are trying to log in (I can't check that, as I'm not registered and don't really want to do so) it may be that it does not accept what you are putting in username and password?

I can open it with Firefox. It's opened as: http://www.co.gwinnett.ga.us/cgi-bin/gwincty/egov/ep/home.do
Try to open this link.

As I mentioned before, in another reply, CompuServe does bring up the page.  I can use any subsites on the page but the "register or log in".  In this case, I get the message that I am refused entry.  The tech guy at the site has no Idea what the problem since other people seem to be able to register.

Thanks

Thanks, but your registration address gave me this:

I could not get the site with IE, but did with CompuServe (probably Netscape).  I could not register, so I asked the Tech person (another address with the same site) to register for me, which he did.  But when I tried to log in, the site refused.  Thanks, let's keep trying.

I noticed in IE that the registration site is a secure connection. That may be the cause of your difficulty.

In IE, tools, internet options, advanced tab, see that the following are checked in the security section:

Use SSL 3.0

Use SSL 2.0

use TSL 1.0

If you click on the ? top right and then click on one of those an info box pops up telling you what they are for.

Also, in security tab, internet zone try setting it to the medium defaults if not already so.

I don't use AOL or Firefox, so can' tell you about those. My other browser is Deepnet Explorer, an IE based browser with tabbing, antiphishing and a few other features. No problems using that either.

Thanks for the information.  I checked the IE settings and they are already as you advised.  I just clicked on http://www.gwinnettcounty.com and IE could not find the webpage.  Incidentally, other counties in my area have a similar address and I can always reach these with IE; the only one that doesn't work is Gwinnett County.  If you will notice, other people with a similar setup have a problem with this site also.
I don't like my ISP Browser (CompuServe - probably a version of Netscape).  Each time I get on the internet with CompuServe, I put it in the tray and bring up IE.  There could very well be a problem with the security of my ISP that is causing this.  Everything was OK until about 6 or 8 weeks ago.  I believe the site has changed something.  I do not believe that my system is the complete problem.

Thanks for the trouble,

Norman

When I use Google,  for gwinnett+county+government I get a normal screen except under the first entry is a site "not found."  This is strange.  When using CompuServe, I get an error 200.  Thanks,  Norman

Are those who have problems with secure sites using Zone Alarm security suite?

I don't use that myself (I have the free ZA firewall only), but reading on the Zone Alarm forum, access to secure pages, such as registration or log in can be denied if the privacy settings in ZASS are not set properly.

Just thought I'd mention it...
