Internet Explorer saving only as bmp

As of 2 days ago IE only wants to save pictures as an untitled bmp, the option of using jpg isn't there anymore. I've made not changes to the system and added no software for over 3 weeks.

jw1778,

When you save a picture in IE your choice is either in the original file format (.gif, .jpf, .png, etc) or as a .bmp file. If you are attemtping to save the image file and only the .bmp choice appears, it may be that is the original image format. To check, right-click on my icon flag image, choose save picture as and you should have a choice to save as either .gif or .bmp from the drop down menu. That is normally the choices you have. If you want to change to a different compressed image format, you will need a graphics program to do so.

Original format is jpg, not bmp, however the only option for saving in the dropdown menu is bmp. Up until 2 days ago it worked fine with jpg or bmp as options. Is there a place for stttings. I could save as bmp and convert in Photopaint, but a lot more work. Thanks

Normally, just dumping the TIF cache will correct this in IE.

I've run into this several times - what I do is just add the ,jpg extension to the filename in the save box and it ends up being saved in jpg format (at least that's the way it shows up in detailed file listing and appears to be opened as such by all of my picture viewing and editing tools - ACDSee, CompuPic Pro, Photoshop).

Dumping the IE cache is the usual way to resolve this. It's been a problem for years with IE and Microsoft still can't fix the problem. Sad, really. It's a simple problem and they just can't or won't fix it.
