Is it necessary to update BIOS?

Is it really necessary to update BIOS prior to downloading SP2?  I was reading through the instructions for updating BIOS, and they look intimidating.  I'm thinking of holding off on installing SP2 after reading some of these posts.  I'm not really computer savvy, and don't have the time to troubleshoot, uninstall/install programs-if I don't have to.  I think I'll wait.  (So, this'll be for future reference).

How can you expect an answer to this overly asked question if you don't even indicate what hardware you have???? We are not mind readers..

If you don't feel confident upgrading, take it to someone who does.

This newsgroup should be renamed the "continuously asked and poorly researched stupid question" forum..

Was that tone really necessary?

No worries, zzyzx....people like that are only seeking attention and are not worthy of my time.

For anyone who is willing to give me some advice: I have a Dimension 4600 with Windows XP.  Thanks!  :-)

SophieSophie, In most cases you do not have to update your Bios in order to install SP2. I updated to SP2 several weeks ago and did not update my Bios. I would suggest that you to do a virus check, do a spyware check, clean out your temp files and make a restore point before you install SP2. Best Wishes,  aps

I am a old timer on this forum. No way, I would have bought couple of dells without the support received from the good people on this forum. I am still learning the art of good computing and do ask very basic questions now and then.

However, once in a while we get a person like "mhoy011" who has nothing worthwhile to offer but discourage the others not to ask questions as they might be considered as stupid questions.

SophieSophie: I have Dell 8250 and have updated the BIOS last night and then installed SP2 (used free CD came from Microsoft) without any problems. I will be updating the BIOS of my other dells 4600 and 4300 but taking my time. I used floppy format. The whole process is simple but scary. If you are not confident then don't do it. You should get dell technical support on phone and they will help you out.

aps and Kanti,

Thank you very much for your advice and encouraging words.  It's nice to have this resource available before navigating new territory.  Kudos to both of you!

I also have a 4600, which I have not yet updated to SP2, nor updated the bios.

I did update to SP2 on my three year old Inspiron 4000 notebook--did it just before the three year warranty expired LOL--and didn't update the bios.  Worked great!  So, I guess I will do this one when I have the time.

Good to see there are cool people here!

To the best of my knowledge, this is the only (Intel) case requiring BIOS update:

" BIOS update is NOT a mandatory prerequisite for successful Service Pack 2 installation. However, it may be needed in some limited cases (e.g. Prescott C-0 stepping and some BIOS). Please see "Your computer stops responding when you restart to complete the installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2" for more details."

Hope this helps!
