I did, and I have not noticed any negative effects as a result.

The newest version is 1.4.2_06, which fixes a critical security flaw in 1.4.2_05. This is the one you should install. You can uninstall all the others.

Actually, the really newest version is 1.5.0_01

It's the run time of Java2 platform.

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp download JRE 5.0 update 1 (it's not just the update, but the whole runtime package).

You can remove the older ones, in fact I uninstalled those before installing the new one..

version thus saving disk space.
