Java Virtual Machine Not Working

Hi.  I have a Dimension E521, running Vista Home Premium.  For some reason, java virtual machine is not appearing on my system, either in the programs listing or in the advanced tab of the Tools menu of IE7.  I have installed and reinstalled JRE 6, and while JRE appears, the JVM does not.  I cannot find a way to isolate this problem or install JVM.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) IS the Java Virtual Machine. They are the same thing.

Thanks, but as you can see, I'm very confused.  I have installed java, it appears in my programs.  I have the java console appearing in control panel.  However, applets do not launch.  The verification app at java.com does not detect java on my computer.  I have selected "use JRE 1.6.0_3 for applet" on the advanced tab of the internet options menu on tools in IE7.  How do I troubleshoot this?

One additonal point.  I find the selection "Sun Java Console" on the Tools menu on IE7.  However, nothing happens when I select it.  Thanks for any help you can provide.

Unistall ALL Java instances. Then install the latest version again and see what happens.

I'm sorry then - I don't have any idea what may be causing the problem. Perhaps someone else will jump in.

OK - one more thing to try. Within IE, Tools>Internet Options>Security tab and click on the Custom Level button. Scroll down to almost the bottom of the list and make sure that "Scripting of Java Applets" is enabled.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I have removed the Java software using the "add/remove" programs feature, and I have reinstalled Java.  I have done this several times.  However, the problem remains unresolved.  Java appears listed as an installed program, but it does not launch when it is supposed to open an applet.  Instead, there is an error message stating Java is not detected or installed, even though it is installed.  I have enabled Java through MS Explorer (using "Tools, Internet Options, Advanced), but the problem persists.  One clue has arisen, however.  I have also tried to enable Java through the Java console, which I access through the Control Panel.  In the Java console, I select "Advanced, default java for Browsers" and I note neither of the two options (MS Internet Explorer and Mozilla family) are selected.  I try to check the box next to MS Internet Explorer, but when I select apply I receive an error message entitled "Unable to change browser settings."  In the body of the error message it reads "Please check if you have sufficient permissions to change system settings."  I am logged on as an administrator, so I do not understand why I get this error message.  I do not know if I can work around this error message, and select MS Internet Explorer in the Java console, whether it will solve this problem.  Finally, in IE, under the Tools menu, there is an option to select "Sun Java Console."  However, nothing happens when I select it.  The only way I can access the Sun Java Console is through the Control Panel.

I appreciate any and all suggestions and help to this perplexing problem.  Many thanks.
