Java Web Start

My young nephew was using my computer (yes I should know better) and he downloaded Java Web Start-Java Web Start Application Manager because he was fasinated with my fast cable modem connection and wanted to run some sort of test on download and upload speeds and said he needed Java. What exactly is this program and what does it do because it is now insalled on my computer.

Java Web Start is part of Sun's Java Runtime.

Start to download this and about halfway thru note the speed. It's safe and accurate.

Creeper, exactly what is this download?

I am still trying to figure out what the Java Web Start does and yes I went to the site and read over the material and just basically did not understand what it is or why  I would need this program.

The download site is from Opt Online. It is used ( by me anyway ) to test your line speed. When you click on the link save to your desktop.

About halfway thru note the speed and cancel. It's pretty accurate. Your speed is displayed in KB/ps.

aps@sun,

I believe that the download--which is provided with the Java Runtime Environment j2re1.4.2_02--installs something called the Java Cup in a sub-folder within the C:\Program Files\Java folder. Inaddition, it installs a shortcut on your desktop, a shortcut that connects to the Internet and plays some sort of foolish game until you close out. Inaddition to all of this, the download provides several pages of "Read Me" material in the "javaws sub-folder". The Introduction to Java Web Start says:
"JavaTM Web Start is a deployment solution for Java-technology-based applications. It is the plumbing between the computer and the Internet that allows the user to launch and manage applications right off the Web. Java Web Start provides easy, one-click activation of applications, and guarantees that you are always running the latest version of the application, eliminating complicated installation or upgrade procedures. "

I received this package because it was bundled with the j2re1.4.2-02. I needed the j2re.....etc because my Mozilla Firebird browser would not work some, necessary Java programs without it.

As far as the Java Web Start program...I read through a far amount, decided to delete the shortcut from my desktop and to ignore the C:\Program Files\Java folder for awhile. I imagine that it is harmless.

aps@sun,

Simply put: WebStart is a player for JNLP files.

Problem: There are no .JNLP files on the internet to open or run! Except the demos you will find loaded on WebStart and the demos on the Sun Java site. JNLP is looking for developers.

JNLP files are java-based programs ONLY that will automatically launch in WebStart which bypasses the browser.

Imagine, you develop a JNLP java-based application. You put a button on your site for others to click to run. The .JNLP files will not launch in their browser much like (.SWF) flash files. But open up more like (.MOV) QuickTime files, and (.RA) Real Player files that everybody is familiar with in its own separate environment. This is what the demos on the Sun site demonstrate.

If you tested the demos you should have noticed how fast it launches the java programs and all without a browser running. It seemed pretty fast to me with DU. JNLP applications will open automatically in the WebStart environment.

Very similar to running programs such as Flash, Shockwave, Windows Media Player, Real Player. Anyone besides yourself who wants to run your JNLP files from your website will need to have WebStart player installed to view and run it.

If you had any JNLP apps which you do not then in order for anyone to view your .JNLP files that you created they would need to have a button to click on a website that runs WebStart and the WebStart program that is included with the JR2 Sun Java download.

In other words, you can live without the WebStart player(application, program). You can delete the WebStart short cut. You are also free to develop and use the WebStart player and free to develop applications to run JNLP.

xley and gothummingbird, Thanks for all the information. Right now I can see no use for me of this Java Program so I uninstalled it. Your informative answers helped me to make this decison and I am sure helped others who are following this thread. I just do not like to have programs on my computer that I do not use. Thank you both!
