Don't know how to stop autoupdate from offering you that update (I never use autoupdate anyway), but this gives info what it's about

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-011.mspx

It updates about 18 files, listed in the article (click on security update information, then on Windows XP). It gives the file versions, you could check that they correspond with what you have).

You could go to Windows update manually, click 'view installation history', see if it records KB835732 as having been successfully installed. If not, try letting it scan your PC, if it offers it you again, let it install it; maybe that would make autoupdate remember, not sure, but worth a try?

JohnK324,

Although it is not mentioned in this document Microsoft links to this document when "You are prompted to install updates that you have already installed." The procedures here may resolve the issue for you.

(You have Outlook Express installed if you are using Windows XP.)

I've got exactly the same problem with this update - automatic update has told me for the last 6-7 days that I need to download this update and each time I do it crops up again the next day. I've visited the download site & get the same message, that the update needs installing. My installation history shows 10(!) successful installations of this same update. I

'll follow the leads given in Denny's post & see if this cures the difficulty. Thanks, Denny.

UPDATE: there is a thread on a MS forum here which suggests we are not alone - I guess when MS get to the bottom of it, they'll issue a patch. Meanwhile, I think I'll uninstall the update.

gudgeon,

Thanks for that info.  I tried the scannow, which did not work.  I tried the repair/reinstall, which not only did not work but it messed XP so bad, I had to do a complete (clean) install.  This time, I switched to Windows XP Professional.

I have not downloaded any updates but when I do, I will not install that update.  Thanks again.
