Line 1 of INF file...error when reinstall XP

I need to reinstall XP after major  virus attack. when trying to use the Win XP CD, I get the following error:

"line 1 of INF file \$Win_NT$ ~BT\Winnt.sif is invalid, setup cannot continue"

The CD is the first to boot from in the BIOS. I don't have any access to the HD only at boot time via the F2 or F12. This is a Dimension 4700.

Any suggestions?

thaks

You must do a complete reinstall including reformatting the hard drive.  If you just try to reinstall Windows that could be the problem.

See THIS on a clean install.

Keep in mind on Dell's the install sequence from a reformatted hard drive is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Intel chipset drivers (3) Install Device Drivers such as sound, video, etc.  DO NOT skip the chpset drivers as one of the prime things they do is define what is on or attached to the motheboard.  The biggest problem we see on this forum is users skipping the chipset drivers and then having problems.

HERE is the Dell driver downloads for the 4700 and XP

Thanks for the quick response.

My problem is that because of the error message I get, I can't even get to the point where i can re-format and install new Windows. How do I go beyond this error message?

It sounds like the Install CD is bad.  If you have another Dell with the same version of XP you can use that CD.  Otherwise HERE is the info on requesting replacement discs from Dell.  Not all systems can qualify for free Dell replacements, but check on that first.  If your PC is past the date of replacements, you will have to buy a new copy.  You can buy OEM Versions, which are less expensive, an OEM version is the same as the Dell version, with not support from Microsoft for problems and can only be installed on one PC.  If you have a CompUSA close by you can buy an OEM version there.  If not, www.newegg.com sells them.
