ME to 2000 upgrade problems..

First off, here's some info on my computer.

Dell Dimension L700cx.

I was trying to upgrade to windows 2000, and in one step it said that I needed to make things compatible w/ win2000 on Dell's website. So I came here and entered my service tag number, which wasn't recognized. I tried all combinations of possible zero's/O's, I's/one's and it didn't matter. My system apparently doesn't exist.

I'm unsure of how to proceed, or if I should at all... any help would be much appreciated.

These are some of the things that windows 2000 aren't finding: BDA IPSink, BDA MPE Filter, BDA Slip De-Framer, Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter... several other things as well, I'm not sure if it's relevant to include them.

Thanks,

scriggityheath

The upgrade you're trying to do doesn't look good according to M.S.

That doesn't mean that Win2k won't function on that model system (it will, and quite well) - it just means that, because Win2k predated the release of WinME, an upgrade installation (one attempted without formatting the drive first) isn't supported.  Since NTFS would presumably be one of the major arguments for installing Win2k, it would make sense to format the drive first anyway.

Flooby,

Never said that a clean install wouldn't work on that particular machine. I had 2000 (clean install) on my L866R Dimension WinMe.

An upgrade doesn't require a reformat, a clean install does.

If the file system is changed from fat32 to ntfs it would be prudent to backup.

The question was about an upgrade not a clean install.

Part of the MS article I posted reads " not a supported upgrade path".

Your specific statement "The upgrade you're trying to do doesn't look good according to M.S. " didn't make a distinction between an upgrade installation versus an upgrade through an improvement in operating systems, which is most probably what Win2k would be.  Since the terms "Upgrade" and "Upgrade installation" are frequently used interchangeably throughout this forum, often with misleading results, and since you didn't make a distinction between the two in your response, my intention was merely to offer a somewhat more complete response to a valid question, rather than to simply imply that something wouldn't work, which is exactly the impression one might have been left with, had they not made the distinction between upgrading a PC by installing a better operating system, and performing an upgrade installation of an OS, which in this instance, while clearly impossible, was not directly presented as being such, in either your statement, or in the MS article.

If someone finds it necessary to inquire about such a thing in this forum, there's a pretty good chance that they're not going to be overly acquainted with Microsoft's coy terms like "supported upgrade path." The Windows XP conference here bears countless examples to that effect, just as this very conference did when ME was initially released.

When I put Windows XP on my Dimension that originally shipped with Windows 98, I upgraded it by installing a better operating system.  I didn't perform an upgrade installation, though, regardless of whether it's a "supported upgrade path" or not.  I'm pretty sure I ended up a lot better off as a result, too, just as scriggityheath will by formatting the drive and clean installing Win2k.

Flooby,

Are we talking about an os upgrade or a computer upgrade? Didn't see that part of the post, please point it out to me.

The post is posted in the Software - Windows Millenium conference.

Computers are not software, there was no query about where to post.

I think that that makes it an upgrade software question.

I plead guilty to an incomplete answer as my typing skills are not up to par with most, therefore I try to make my posts brief rather than step on someones toes.

As a side note I would never presume to know more or go against Microsofts advice. If I (and many others) knew more than they did we wouldn't be here posting, correct?

You're completely missing the point, which is why I'll rest on my last response, and leave it at that.

Flooby,

There are more important things to concern ourselves with than samantics.

Have a good night.
