MS DOS prompt coming up on task bar

I don't know if I'm  posting this to the right board, but lately  when I reboot and all the programs are coming onto the desk top and the task  bar, I get the MS Dos prompt.  If I click on this while it is there I get to the  blank DOS   screen.  This never happened before today.  Is it something I have to reset or is it trying to tell me something?

Also before this started I received an error that the operating system was not found.  Not sure if these started coincidentally or  if they go together.  After receiving this message about the operating system, I turned PC off and back on and booted fine.

Thanks

Try doing a scandisk(error check) on your computer. Go to my computer, right-click Local disk(C) and go to properties. Go to the tools tab and you will see scandisk or error checking from there.

Thanks.

My PC hasn't been running as smoothly as it should, so today after a WordPerfect crash when it rebooted it ran through this whole ScanDisc looking for a bad sector.  After it went through the whole thing it found a directory error and some bad clusters and when it rebooted to Windows the MS Dos did not come up.

So funny that I should get your reply tonight.  Now I'm looking for a good backup software for my hard drive just in case.  I have all my business documents and documents I create as I operate a transcription service and I would like to copy everything.  Do you know how the Disc Backup on Windows 98 compares to some of the software you can buy.  I was thinking also of maybe just copying to an external hard drive.

I think its better to just burn your files to a disk or as what you said, copy it to an external drive so that it would be easier to transfer to a diff. computer in case it has a diff. operating system.

Also, for software issues you could also check your registry.
