MS Internet Explorer v6

I'm having numerous problems with MS Internet Explorer v6 on my new Dell XPS200, and have decided that I should reinstall.  When I go to the Microsoft websites and try to find the right download, I don't get it.  I only seem to be able to get Service Pack 2 updates or other things that don't seem to relate to IE specifically.  How do I get it?

There are many problems that can be resolved without reinstalling IE. If you describe the problems, someone may be able to help. If you want to repair or reinstall, here are the instructions from Microsoft.

jhager,

You have two options. To reinstall IE6 on a system with XP SP2 you must reinstall Windows XP. Alternatively, since your system is new, you can restore it to "as shipped" condition using the procedure here.

There two ways that may take care of your problem.
One likely cause of IE6 not functioning properly is a corrupted file. Microsoft says this is the "most" likely cause, but I think that's wishful thinking.  To run a check on the files and see if one or more is corrupted use the System File Checker that is included with Windows XP.
Click [Start] [Run] and type sfc /scannow in the [Open] box.
(Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)
In all likelihood you will be prompted to insert the Windows XP CD ROM.  Go ahead and do this and let the program run.
Once the System File Checker has finished, reboot and test to see if the problem has been resolved. If the problem still exists you have three choices.
  In-place upgrade of Windows XP
  Repair Windows XP
  Reinstall Windows XP

Or you can try this method. It involves editing the registry and reinstalling Internet Explorer 6.  BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST
Start > Run >Regedit

Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: DWORD // Value Name: IsInstalled
Setting for Value Data: [Change the Value from 1 to 0]
Exit Registry

Then download IE6 SP1 from Microsoft and install it.  You will then want to use Microsoft's update web page to get the latest security patches.

No, actually there is only one option since the system already has SP2 installed and that is the third listed (Reinstall Windows XP).

Bay Wolf,

The phraseology on the MSKB page is not clear cut (to say the least). Microsoft's directions: "XP SP2: Reinstall Windows XP SP2" would be more helpful if it specified which to reinstall or said "Reinstall SP2 to Windows XP." I know that reinstalling XP with SP2 will fix the problem and since the original poster has a new system with SP2 installed it is impossible for him/her to install only SP2.

You may be able to just reinstall the Service Pack 2 for WinXP and not the whole OS.

Denny, I read the same MSKB article and I agree that the language used to describe the needed process is by far not clear.

As for the performing the SP2 install by itself, I wasn't sure, hence the wording maybe.  I didn't want to lead the person on to believe that this was definately a fix.  I will keep that in mind next time.
