Memory Upgrade and Stop Error

I recently upgraded my Dell 8100 from the original 128mb ram to 512mb ram. Since then the PC runs for approximately 10 min then starts reboot and locks up. It halts with the following stop error

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

STOP 0x000000d1 (0x867c4ffb, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0xf5f2b403) usbport.sys

address F5f2b403 base at F5f26000 date stamp 41107d62

I have read about driver upgrades, and updates, but does not seem to apply. Does this mean my new memory is not compatible?

Any suggestions to fix the issue?

Try that, as well as removing and reseating the pieces you recently added.

I did not purchase from Dell although my computer guy, tells me according to the dell manual online it's the right stuff.

They all say that, but they are occasionally wrong.  If memory serves me correctly, the Dim 8100 uses RDRAM, which requires additional modules to be installed in matched pairs.  If whomever added RAM only installed 1 piece, that may explain why the system won't boot.

Thanks for the insight. I will try pulling the new memory. A few worthy notes on your previous post though.

1. The memory installed is RDRAM and has been installed in 2@256mb and both modules are a matched pair.

2. You implied in your second response that the system is not booting. In fact the system boots, just runs for only about 10-15 min. After this time, it trys to re-boot and that's when i get the error. If i let the machine set for about 10-15 min it will then reboot, but I am not able to reboot immediatly after the error.

Where did you get the RAM?  If anywhere other than Dell or Crucial, it may not be the proper RAM.  Have you tried removing and reseating the stuff you just added, or removing the new piece and seeing if it boots then?  Also, are you referring to an Inspiron 8100, or a Dimension 8100?  The possible fixes may depend on the specific model.

Bad choice of terminology..."it's not running the way it should" would have been better.  I'm still betting that the new RAM is responsible, either because it's bad/incompatible or because of improper installation.

Thanks for your help, and advice taken. Although, now real delima. I replaced my new memory with the original, and not machine won't boot at all (with either set). I looked at both sets of memory and maybe i'm missing something.

The original memory: (128mb total) 64mb,NEC RIMM 600-53 (speed-trac), 64mb/4d (module capacity/# RDRAMS), non-ecc

New Memory: (512mb total) 256mb Samsung RIMM 800-45 (speed-trac), 256mb/16 (module capacity/# RDRAMS), ECC

Memory from DELL says 184-pin RIMM w/ECC PC800, Logical type PC800, speed PC800, Logical Type: 256x18, Description ECC, unbuffered. This is for the offered 512mb module offered on the DELL page.

What am I missing? Does ECC matter? Specs online say w/ecc, yet memory I pulled is non-ecc. Any suggestions?
