Microsoft .NET Framework and clean reinstall
Is it necessary to install all versions of Microsoft .NET Framework (i.e. versions 2.0, 3.0. 3.5, and 4.0) as part of a clean reinstall, or does version 4.0 incorporate all prior versions?

Version 4.0 does not incorporate all the prior versions. For Windows XP I recommend installing them all but in particular version 2.0 as it is often needed for some of the Video Drivers to install.

polar96,
Windows XP needed all versions of .net framework installed.
Vista, Windows 7/8, just the latest version. If your system was upgraded, there is a know .net framework error for Dell Printers, but it may also be showing for other devices. Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Error After Upgrading to Windows 7
