Microsoft SQL Server

Hello

I just recieved my E1505 and would like to know what the SQL Server software is
and why it came installed on this Laptop?

It really is sad that even when choosing only the o.s. and no other software...Dell
still installs loads of "junk" that makes people consider reformating and re-installing
on a brand new machine. I am not just referring to the SQL stuff, as I realize there
might be a reason for this..BUT..I am referring to all the "trial" security software
I did not select when purchasing and all the internet provider junk, ESPNmotion,
google desktop and Toolbar, netwaiting, Yahoo music jukebox....and the list goes on...

sorry if I sound a little abrupt, but I feel as though Im not a "satisfied" customer.

but anyway...is there anyone who can explain the SQL server to me?....thanks.

What makes you think you have SQL server on your PC?

Hello msgale,

I assumed it was Microsoft SQL Server because;

there is an icon on startup in my system tray that is "Microsoft SQL Server Service Manager".

and in "add remove programs" there is "Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine".

thanks.

MSDE is not Microsoft SQL Server.  It is a small free database available from Microsoft, and is used some third party products.  It can be removed via add/remove, but I wouldn't do it.

according to microsoft it is an "earlier" version of SQL Server.

In an effort to provide customers with more secure products, Microsoft Windows Server "Longhorn" and Microsoft Windows Vista will only support SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later when it becomes available. Earlier versions of SQL Server, including SQL Server 2000 (all editions including Desktop Engine edition, a.k.a MSDE), SQL Server 7.0, and SQL Server 6.5, will not be supported on Windows Server "Longhorn" or Windows Vista. Customers running applications with these earlier versions of SQL Server should consider evaluating and upgrading to SQL Server 2005, which was designed to take advantage of the upcoming security and performance enhancements in the operating environment.......... http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/sqlonvista.mspx

So what is the "database" for and why does it run on startup?

MSDE is the free cut doen version of SQL Server 2000.
If it is a Vista machine , then MS wont support this , so it shouldnt be on there!!!
If you have a database , dont uninstall it , but if it come pre-loaded , uninstall it , it will CANE your system resources.
It uses lots of RAM and should only be used if running database applications.

P.S. Peace out
