Kinda flying blind here without any specifics (exact error messages, etc.),  but some ideas:

By "I really need antivirus", do you mean you think you already have a malware infection?

If so, some malware can deliberately block installation of programs designed to remove it.   It can also block your administrator access (assuming that's what you mean by "cannot get access to CBS log" even using the instructions Microsoft has HERE).

If that's the case,  you'll need to get rid of the malware.      There is a malware removal forum here with experts that may be able to help - read the "Please Read This Before Posting" at the top there for instructions on what to include:

http://en.community.dell.com/forums/3521.aspx

If that's NOT what's going on,  more specifics would help get a better answer:

1) What operating system?  (I'm guessing Vista, but guessing isn't a good idea).

2) What programs are you trying to install, and exactly what error do you get?  There are several kinds of .msi errors.

Also,   antivirus programs sometimes do not play well together - if you already had one (even it's expired or partially removed), some require use of a special removal tool to completely clear them from the system before installing another.

3) Rather than reinventing the wheel here, what did Dell and/or the vendors already suggest?  I will guess they suggested the SFC, but anything else you've already tried?

I will try and fill you in a little more and answer the points raised sequentially.

1. I upgraded my computer, new hardware and software from Windows xp home and limited ram to Windows Ultima, 64 bit and lots of ram. Running a new computer without a virus protection is like buying a really nice car and having to leave the keys in the ignition and not being able to lock the doors. No malware or viruses todate. In the interim, I have been able to connect with someone at Microsoft who made some suggestions and allowed me to download Microsoft virus program. I was able to install and run it so I do have protection, albeit, not the anti-virus package that I purchased and subscribe to.

2. Operating system is Window 7 ultima, 64 bit.

3. I was trying to install Eset Security and get the following message  when I try and run the download package:  ""nt64_emi.msi is not a valid Win 32 application". I tried downloading Norton - the 30 day free version and got the same message. At that time my computer was clean and had no evidence of an anti-virus programme running on it.

4. I had a bit of a thought last night about running sfc /Scannow. When I did it indicated I had some corrupted files but could not correct them. I have a bit of a glitch in my Office 2007 file as well as Windows. Am not able to backup most of my office, for some reason. I keep getting error messages.

5. Dell said it was not a software problem, rather, it was a problem with the vendor. I spent 8 hours on the phone yesterday with eset and Dell plus lots of time previously with ESET. I know it is a software problem but Dell will not accept that conclusion. If you have some suggestions regarding fixing of the corrupted files, I would forever be in your debt.

Thanks.

There's a tutorial on the CBS.log that may be easier to follow than the one from Microsoft.

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/56234-make-cbs-log-useable.html

However,  you have to know exactly what you're looking for.   Though I'm far from qualified to analyze it in any great detail,  my SFC log (in XP)  lists 2 "corrupt" files related to  Windows Sidebar and tcpmon.ini .  Problem is, after a lot of searching discovered that the sidebar one is a known bug,  and the tcpmon.ini is a configuration file for legacy printers, but my printer is just fine.   Nothing is actually broken.

Here's what's bugging me.    How come you could install Microsoft Security Essentials, but you couldn't install either NOD or Norton?  An .msi is an .msi.

I'm still thinking about it.
